You may work in a company that has an Internal Auditor or an Internal Auditing department without ever knowing what exactly it is that they do.
The Institute of Internal Auditors says that internal auditing is “an independent, objective assurance and consulting activity designed to add value and improve an organization’s operations. It helps an organization accomplish its objectives by bringing a systematic, disciplined approach to evaluate and improve the effectiveness of risk management, control, and governance processes.”
What this means is that the internal auditor provides a formal monitoring service designed to add value and improve operations. That’s right folks, they add value. Your internal auditor will systematically evaluate every aspect of the business to ensure that the systems, policies, procedures and controls in place are actually effective. They will evaluate the data gathered and advise relevant parties of their findings. In some, but not all instances, the internal auditor will consult with management on findings.
So next time your friendly IA drops by your department to “pick on you”, remember they’re ensuring that your employer continues to exist and pay your wages!
